A Poem by Allie
To Gran,
I think of you and I cry,
I ask one question – why,
Why did you have to die?
I think of you and I feel sad.
For me, Jess, Michael, Carol, Dad,
James, Carrie, Tasha, Tamsin, Mel,
Jen, Dave, Andrew, Zac and Ciaran as well.
Your friends and family – all who loved you
We are really going to miss you.
I think of you and I’m inspired.
I hope one day that I’m as admired
For strength of character and determination,
Loyalty, love and devotion.
I think of you and I’m in awe
Of how you toiled through the war.
Of how you kept on going strong.
You worked so hard for everyone.
I think of you and I think of flowers,
Of all those well loved gardening hours.
You amazed me with all you grew.
You amazed me with all you knew.
I think of you and I grin.
My memories held tight within.
The comments that you often shared.
Who overheard – you never cared.
When shopping, “Aren’t people getting fat!
What is she wearing? Look at that”
I think of you and I smile.
How could you wear thermals all the while?
In England, sure, I agree
But Egypt at 40 degrees?
I think of you, I hear your laughter.
You would laugh, I’d laugh right after.
We’d laugh at me, we’d laugh at you,
At quirky things that you would do
Take crab forks with when out to eat,
Feed your animals on quality meat.
Animals who would wonder in
And stay knowing they’re onto a good thing.
I think of you and I feel love
For you – the person described above.
But also a love from you to me,
A proud love for your family.
I’m sorry gran
I wasn’t there
I didn’t show you how much I care
I didn’t say how much I love you…
I love you Gran

The Coleman Family
My family have been neighbours of Frances for many years, and valued her friendship. She will be greatly missed by my family and her other neighbours in North Cray Road.

Steve(the gardener) & Denise Board
Ah what a beautiful poem, and photographs all with such great stories. Thank you for sharing them.
Steve worked for Mrs Chu for many years and was extremely fond of her. Her sense of fun and her Mrs Dolittle tendencies were a constant source of giggling, and I know Steve will miss Mrs Chu a great deal. He always thought her to be inspirational and he admired her . Her simplistic view on life, the way Mrs Chu just got on with whatever the task in hand happened to be was a gift, and Steve was glad to haver known her.
I only met Mrs Chu a few times, although we spoke a little more on the phone, sadly I didn’t know her that well. Yet a couple of things have stayed in my mind. We had gone along to the open day for the Bath House with our children. We were served tea and cake (there’s a surprise) but there was only one piece of lemon drizzle cake left, and it nearly got sold, yet Mrs Chu acted like lightening to grab it, as it was Steve’s favorite, how sweet was she.
I loved the way one christmas she bought Steve a video on how to ‘Prune Roses’. Mrs Chu didn’t want hurt his feelings, but in the same token wanted her roses pruned properly!!
A wonderful lady we will miss dreadfully, but are so much better for having the privilege of knowing dear Mrs Chu.
God Bless
